NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State volleyball hosted its annual alumni match Saturday afternoon in Gentry Center. Assistant coach and former middle blocker Vicmari Prospero also joined volleyball alumnae Alexis Johnson (2018), Taylor Patterson (2016), Jamie Cooper (2015) and Danielle Bowman (2012) on the court and had some explosive kills. However, the 2019 squad swept the alumni 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-15).
With the volleyball team staring down its first match of the season next week against North Alabama, the alumni match serves as a way for head coach Donika Sutton to see what needs improvement and what works, while also connecting the future of TSU volleyball with its past.
“I really miss the game, so coming back and playing is such a great opportunity,” said Bowman. “I think the team looks amazing this year. There is a lot of young talent and I am very excited to see what they are going to be doing this year. The talent is amazing,” commented Bowman on this season’s team.
“They gave us a tough game and it helped us see what we need to work on,” mentioned libero Gina Rivera Ortiz. “We need to improve in defense movement and blocking. But, overall, we did really well. Right now, we are in a really good position for this upcoming season.”
“I feel ready for this upcoming game, for North Alabama,” stated Sutton. “We are still fairly young, still trying to incorporate a lot of different things. But, once we get all these pieces together, we will be right where we need to be.”
Tigers will host North Alabama this upcoming Tuesday, Aug. 20 in the Gentry Center.
