MATCH INFORMATION: The Tennessee State volleyball team begins Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. and the Morehead State Eagles Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. In honor of the late Hakeem Parker, a 2016 graduate who lost his battle with cancer last week, the team will be sporting orange throughout the weekend.
TSU UPDATE: Tennessee State travelled to Springfield, Missouri, last weekend where the team went 0-3 in its last preseason tournament after falling to Washington State (3-0), Illinois (3-0) and Missouri State (3-0). Senior setter Sam Beltran recorded her seventh double-double of the season against Missouri State. Beltran posted 27 assists and 11 digs. Throughout the weekend, Beltran put down eight kills, 64 assists, 30 digs and three blocks. Preseason OVC pick Julia Pierson led the team in kills (25) and she put up seven blocks. Junior college transfer Rachel Henderson rounded out the weekend posting 20 kills, five blocks and 24 points for the Tigers.As the team begins conference play, the Tigers are looking to improve upon its 4-9 record.
SERIES INFORMATION: In the all-time series against EKU the Tigers are 11-52. In the last five seasons, TSU has gone 3-11 with the Colonels, winning only one at home in 2012. Against Morehead State, TSU is 12-47 in the all-time series and in the last five seasons has gone 4-6 with three of the four wins at home.
ABOUT EASTERN KENTUCKY: The Colonels enter conference play with a 2-12 record. Outside hitters Nikki Drost and Celina Sanks will be the leaders of EKU’s offense, while middle blockers Ciera Koons, Kaylin Johnson and defensive specialist Chloe Rojas lead the defense.
ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE: Morehead State begins conference play against Belmont and then visits TSU for its second match of the weekend. Going into conference play, the Eagles hold a 9-4 overall record winning two matches away from home. Four Eagles, Olivia Lohmeier, Maddie Fella, Jordan Jones and Lauren Rokey, have won conference player of the week honors.
