OPENING MATCH: The Tennessee State volleyball team will take on Denver for its opening match at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic hosted by College of Charleston on Friday, Aug. 25, at 4:30 p.m.

TSU UPDATE: Coming off a 17-16 record and a trip to the conference quarterfinals, Tennessee State begins the season with a new head coach at the helm – Donika Sutton. Three starters plus a libero are returning, including Preseason All-OVC selection Julia Pierson (Rowlett, Texas).

ABOUT DENVER: The Pioneers return to the court after a 23-9 record and a conference championship win. For the fourth consecutive year, Denver was chosen as the Summit League preseason favorites. The team went 6-8 last season away from home.

ABOUT COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: The Cougars are coming off a 17-12 campaign and are tabbed by the Colonial Athletic Association to win its regular season conference championship.  Middle blocker Kennedy Madison was named Preseason All-CAA who played in all but two of 111 sets last season.

ABOUT USC UPSTATE: The Spartans are returning 10 letterwinners making USC Upstate the team with the most veterans at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic. The team finished the 2016 season with a record of 14-19 and a trip to the ASUN semifinals for the first time in program history.

ROAD WARRIORS: Charleston is more than 550 miles from TSU’s campus in Nashville. It is the furthest distance TSU will travel in regular season play. TSU’s schedule features 19 games away from Kean Hall, including 11 true road games and six in neutral locations.

UP NEXT: The Tigers head to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to take on Western Kentucky on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.
