NASHVILLE --- Sophomore outside hitter Julia Pierson is one of only two sophomores named to the All-Preseason team announced by the Ohio Valley Conference this morning. Tennessee State was picked to finish eighth in a vote of the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
As a freshman, Pierson played in all 33 matches, starting 30. She was second on the team in kills (275) and led the team in total blocks (90). Additionally, Pierson excelled off the court earning a spot on the 2016 OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a 3.25+ GPA. Pierson will be replacing the production of last season’s leader in kills, senior Chloe Watson, and has shown throughout the first week of camp, she is ready to take on that role.
Tennessee State finished last season 17-16 overall with a conference record of 8-8. In last season’s OVC tournament, they fell to Austin Peay in the quarterfinals, but look to make it to the championship with this season’s seven returners and six newcomers.
Belmont, who fell to Eastern Kentucky in the quarterfinals, has been picked to win the 2017 OVC tournament with 10 first-place votes and 223 points. Defending champions Murray State were given only six first-place votes placing them fourth in the in the preseason poll after losing five seniors to graduation.
The Tigers will begin the season in the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic versus Denver on Aug. 25 in Charleston, South Carolina.
