Tigers Drop Final Regular Season Match to Eastern Kentucky

NASHVILLE --- The Tigers (17-15, 8-8 OVC) dropped a match to visiting Eastern Kentucky (14-14, 9-7 OVC) on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Kean Hall, 3-1.

Seniors Chloe Watson and Arijana Anderson both finished with 11 kills to leads the Tiger offense. Taylor Patterson paced the team with 13 digs while Watson finished with 12 and Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus added 10. Samantha Beltran dished out 19 assists in the match. The Tigers lost by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, and 25-22.

The Tigers would take an early 4-2 lead to start set one. Both teams started off strong offensively in the match. An Alexis Johnson kill slowed down an EKU run making the score 11-9 Colonels. Another run by Eastern Kentucky made the score 19-15 before a Payten Clark kill pulled the Tigers within three. A kill by Watson made the score 21-19 in favor of EKU. After a Colonel made the score 22-20 TSU would take a timeout to regroup. Another kill from Eastern Kentucky gave the Colonels a 24-21 advantage before TSU took timeout number two. EKU won set one on a kill.

Tennessee State trailed 2-1 to start stanza number two. EKU built a 10-6 lead before a Patterson kill pulled TSU within three. A block by TSU tied the score at 10 all. After a Colonel hitting error gave the Tigers a 13-11 lead EKU took its first timeout of the day. A Watson kill gave the Tigers a 15-13 advantage. Another kill by Watson extended TSU’s lead to 18-13 and EKU took its last timeout of the set.Clark recorded a kill that gave the Tigers a 21-15 lead. Tennessee State won the second set on an Anderson kill.

Watson tied the score in the third frame on a powerful kill. A hitting error by the Colonels tied the score at six before a Clark kill gave TSU a one point lead. EKU built a13-9 lead thanks to a couple of service aces and two TSU hitting errors. Tennessee State took a timeout trailing 15-11. Eastern Kentucky maintained a four point lead on a block. After a Colonel service ace put EKU up 22-16 the Tigers burned another timeout. The Colonels would go on to win 25-18.

The fourth set would begin with a see-saw match as the score would be tied at every point until Eastern Kentucky took a 6-4 lead. After being down by four Anderson would help bring TSU to within one point down 10-9. An EKU hitting error gave TSU a 13-12 lead. Eastern Kentucky would regain a 16-13 lead forcing a TSU timeout. Anderson registered a kill to bring the Tigers within one down 18-17 forcing a Colonel timeout. A Watson kill evened the score at 20. Anderson put TSU up 22-21 on a kill. A TSU hitting error gave the Colonels a win.

UP NEXT: The Tigers will begin OVC tournament play next Thursday November 17, with place and opponent yet to be announced.
