NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State took on conference opponent Morehead State in Kean Hall in a match that saw TSU earn a hard fought win over MSU by a 3-2 score.
Chloe Watson had herself a night offensively with 22 kills for the Tigers. Payten Clark and Julia Pierson registered 12 and 10 kills respectively; while Arijana Anderson added nine. Defensively multiple players pitched in with Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus leading the team in digs with 16 and Taylor Patterson contributing 14. TSU won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 before losing the next two by the same 25-22 score. The Tigers got out to a fast start in set five and finished strong winning the final frame 15-12.
The match started off with the Tigers taking a 3-1 lead on an Arijana Anderson kill. After a TSU block gave Tennessee State an 8-5 advantage Morehead State took an early timeout. An Eagle kill gave Morehead a 10-9 lead. A kill by Taylor Patterson gave TSU a 17-13 lead. After MSU pulled within two Patterson recorded another kill; followed by an Alexis Johnson kill gave TSU a 19-15 edge. Morehead State committed a service error and Payten Clark recorded a kill to give Tennessee State a set one win.
Both teams exchanged the first three points with the score tied thanks to a Watson kill. A kill by Morehead gave the Eagles an 8-4 lead. Johnson slowed the MSU run down on her second kill of the night; that sparked a four nothing TSU run that tied the score at eight all. After a Pierson kill tied the score at 11 Morehead called its first timeout of the set. The score would go back and forth with TSU slightly leading 16-14. The Tigers extended its lead to 22-17 forcing another Eagle timeout.
The third frame saw Tennessee State down 4-1 early. A ball handling penalty from MSU tied the score at four. TSU went on a run that put them up 8-4 forcing an Eagle timeout. The Eagles scored four points after the break tying the score at nine. Trailing 13-11 the Tigers took their first timeout of the night. TSU would then tie the score at 15 apiece. The Tigers went up 17-16 on Pierson’s seventh kill. After the Eagles went up 21-19 TSU evened the score at 21 apiece. Morehead took its last timeout of the set. With the score tied at 23 MSU scored consecutive points to win set three.
A TSU block started set four. A ball handling error by the Eagles put the Tigers up six to five. A block by Morehead put the Eagles up 10-8. The Tigers tied it at 10 before the Eagles went up 12-10. After the Eagles went up by three Watson recorded a kill that made the score 15-13. The Tigers pulled within on an Anderson kill. With the Eagles leading 20-18 the Tigers burned a timeout to regroup. Another Watson kill put the Tigers down 22-20. A mishap by the Eagles made the score 22-21 in favor of MSU. A TSU error gave the Eagles a set four win.
Anderson started the last stanza with a powerful kill. Tennessee State took a quick 5-1 lead forcing Morehead to take a timeout. A Watson kill extended the Tiger lead to 7-1. A Clark kill made the score 8-2 before the two teams switched sides. A Morehead run was slowed by an Eagle service error. The score would see the Tigers up 10-8 before TSU took a timeout. Tennessee State took a 12-9 lead on another Anderson kill forcing the Eagles to take its last timeout. A Watson kill gave TSU a five set win.
