NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Tennessee State hosted crosstown rival Belmont on Tuesday night. The Tigers would beat the Bruins by a score of 3-2.
Chloe Watson recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs and Payten Clark added 11 kills to lead the Tigers offensively. Watson recorded five killsand a block in fifth set. Along with Watson’s 11 digs Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus had 18 digs and Puamana Danielson and Samantha Beltran contributed 16 digs apiece to help TSU defensively. Beltran also dished out 41 assists.
A hot start for the Tigers gave them a commanding 9-3 lead on rival Belmont to begin set one. The visiting team would take its first timeout of the night to slow TSU down. After the timeout Tennessee State stretched its lead to 15-3 forcing another Belmont timeout. The Bruins would force the Tigers to take a timeout after going on a run that put the score at 17-8. Belmont continued to add to its run that made the score 20-18 in favor of TSU. The Tigers would have a 23-22 lead before taking their second timeout of the frame. A Payten Clark kill followed by a Clark and Patterson block ended the match with a TSU 25-23 win.
Two consecutive service aces by Belmont started the second frame. Belmont would take an 8-4 advantage early in the set. The Tigers trailed 11-6 before going on a three point run to bring the score to 11-9. A six point Bruin run would make the score 17-9 and TSU would take its first timeout of the set. Behind 23-11 Tennessee State would burn another timeout. Three consecutive Bruin errors made the score 24-14 before a service error by the Tigers ended the set with Belmont winning 25-14.
Stanza number three would start with a 4-2 Belmont advantage. The Bruins increased their lead to 8-4 before a kill by Katora Roberts made the score 8-5. An eight to one Belmont run would make the score 14-6 and TSU would take the first timeout of the set. After a three point run for Tennessee State the Bruins took a timeout with a 17-11 lead. The Tigers would close the gap to 20-15 before a Bruin kill gave Belmont a six point advantage. The Tigers took a timeout down 23-16. Back to back kills for the Bruins would end set three with a 25-17 win for Belmont.
The beginning of the fourth frame would be a back and forth match with an early 5-4 lead for the Tigers. A Tennessee State block tied the score at 8 apiece. Belmont would take a 12-10 lead before a service error by the Bruins ended a three point run. TSU trailed 16-14 before a Watson kill put the Tigers down by one. Trailing 20-17 Tennessee State took a timeout to regroup. TSU took a quick timeout after the score became 22-19 in favor of Belmont. The Tigers scored two straight points to make the score 22-21 forcing Belmont to call a timeout. The Tigers took a 23-22 lead on a Bruin hitting error. With the score tied at 24 a kill by Alexis Johnson followed by a Belmont attack error gave Tennessee State a 26-24win.
The final set would start with the Tigers up 2-1 thanks to a Watson/Clark block. A kill by Watson gave TSU a 4-3 advantage before a Bruin block evened the game at four all. Neither team would give any room with the score being tied at multiple points. A hitting error by Belmont gave the Tigers an 8-6 advantage before the two squads switched sides. A Watson kill forced Belmont to take a timeout with the Tigers leading 11-8. Belmont trailed 12-11 and Tennessee State took a timeout. With the score tied at 14 a Roberts’ kill gave TSU a one point lead and the Bruins took a timeout. TSU would work hard for the last point and Payten Clark would be rewarded with a game winning kill by a 16-14 score!
