Tigers Fly Away With Win in Five Against Morehead State

MOREHEAD, KY --- Tennessee State would travel to Morehead State where they would fly away with a win over the Eagles by a score of 3-2.

Multiple Tigers contributed offensively for TSU with three players registering double-digit kills. Chloe Watson led the way with 14 kills followed by Payten Clark with 12 and Taylor Patterson with 10. Katora Roberts barely missed double-digit kills with nine. Defensively Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus had 18 digs and Watson contributed 16. Clark also had 10 block assists in the match. Watson and Clark would both have double-doubles in the game.

The first set for TSU started off with the Tigers scoring the first two points. Morehead State would then score four straight points before an Anderson kill put an end to the Eagles run. Two more kills for Tennessee State would force Morehead State to take a timeout. The Tigers would trail 19-16 before using its first timeout of the match. TSU would burn timeout number two down 24-20. A hitting error by the Tigers would cost TSU set one by a score of 25-20.

Both teams would trade point for point to begin the second stanza. The score would be tied for the first seven points before the Eagles took a 9-7 lead. Back to back blocks would tie the score at 12 all. TSU would take a 13-12 lead on a ball handling error by Morehead. The Tigers extended their lead to 16-12 on a kill by Clark. The Eagles would lead 22-20 before a kill by Roberts pulled TSU to within 1. A kill by Patterson knotted things at 22. An Adorno-DeJesus service ace gave Tennessee State a 23-22 lead forcing Morehead to call a timeout. The Tigers would use its second timeout trailing 24-23. The score would be tied at 24 and 25. A TSU block followed by a Julia Pierson kill would give the Tigers a set two win by a 27-25 score!

Frame number three would start off with the Tigers down 4-0. Consecutive kills from TSU would pull the score to within two. The Tigers would build a 10-8 using two service aces from Patterson. Tennessee State would extend its lead to 18-13 and make Morehead use a timeout. A kill by Watson would give TSU a 24-20 lead. A ball handling error by Morehead would end the set with Tennessee State winning 25-20!

Early in the fourth set the Tigers found themselves down 5-3 before consecutive kills and a hitting error put them up 6-5. TSU would trail 9-8 after kills from Morehead. A Patterson ace tied the score at nine. The Eagles would score three straight points to go up 16-13 forcing a TSU timeout. After trailing by two points a Clark kill followed by a Patterson kill put Tennessee State up 19-18. The score would be tied at 19, 20, 21 and 22. The Eagles scored two straight points to lead 24-22. The Tigers would drop set four 25-22.

The final frame would start off with back to back blocks followed by a kill and a net error to give TSU a 4-0 lead. Morehead saw enough and used a timeout. Watson would record back to back kills to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead. A block by Roberts put TSU up 8-5. A pretty set from Danielson set up a kill for Arijana Anderson to put the Tigers up 11-6. Morehead would score four straight points and trail 11-10 before Tennessee State called a timeout. A kill by Clark would give TSU a 14-11 lead. Watson had an emphatic kill to give the Tigers a 15-12 win.
