Final Tune Up for Volleyball Before Conference Play Begins

OPENING SET: The Tigers will play in their last pre-season tournament in the Scenic City Showdown in Chattanooga, Tenn. TSU will open with a match against Ole Miss on Friday, before competing against Chattanooga and Appalachian State on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State won its season home opener against Alabama A&M by a score of 3-0. This was the second time this season the Tigers have beaten the Bulldogs. Julia Pierson led the team in kills with nine, while Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus had 15 digs. Puamana Danielson dished out 26 assists in the game. The team combined to have a hitting percentage of .305. TSU’s top two games by hitting percentage this season have both come against A&M.

ABOUT OLE MISS: The Rebels were picked to finish 12th in the SEC. Ole Miss returns four starters including Kathryn Carter who made the SEC All-Freshman team. On the season they have a record of 9-1 with their only loss coming against Lipscomb. Offensively Kate Gibson is the team leader in kills with 158 on the season.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA: The Mocs were picked second in the preseason SoCon poll. Chattanooga had two players selected to the All-Conference preseason team in seniors Allie Davenport and Kristy Wieser. UTC has a 5-5 record so far this season.

ABOUT APPALACHIAN STATE: Appalachian State has a 2-8 record on the year. The Mountaineers have lost seven consecutive games. Their volleyball was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division. Ashton Gregory was selected to the preseason all-conference team.

ALL TIME VS OPPONENTS: In the all-time series versus the tournament opponents, TSU has a 1-1 record against Ole Miss, against Chattanooga the Tigers are 1-6 and have a record of 1-3 against Appalachian State.


UP NEXT: The Tigers will begin their quest for an OVC championship. They will play their first conference game against defending OVC champion Belmont on Tuesday Sept. 20.
