NASHVILLE --- Former Tennessee State volleyball player Haley Hampton (Mesquite, TX.) signed her first professional contract to play the upcoming season with Pallavolo Spongano in Italy.
The middle hitter led TSU in attack percentage at .281 during the 2015 season. Hampton finished the season second on the team in kills (269), points (344.5) and total blocks (91). In 2014 Hampton transferred to TSU from Panola junior college where she was a First Team All-Conference selection her sophomore year.
“I would like to thank my very close friend Bria Bell for keeping me motivated and always sharing some positive words when I needed it. We talked everyday about chasing our dreams and never stop grinding for something you want,” Hampton said. “I also, want to thank my former club coach Travis Ferguson for taking time out of his busy summer to help me train for this type of opportunity. He is like a father to me and has been since I was 16. I can't thank him enough for supporting me and my dream.”
For the Tigers, the middle hitter had standout games against Tennessee Tech when she had a season high 16 kills and against Austin Peay when she accounted for eight service aces.
The Ohio Valley Conference awarded Hampton a spot on the All-Tournament team for her efforts in the 2015 OVC tournament.
Hampton will begin practicing with her new team on Aug. 29.
“It is a wonderful feeling to finally say I am a professional athlete. The grind doesn't stop here. Now, I have to prove myself in this league so I can move up. During the summer I would constantly pray and ask God to keep me motivated no matter what.“
