NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee State volleyball team (14-13, 9-6 OVC) honored its seniors with a 3-0 sweep over Belmont University (14-13, 11-4 OVC) Wednesday night in Kean Hall.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the first before forcing Belmont into their first timeout of the set. A 4-1 run, highlighted by kills from junior Chloe Watson and sophomore Samantha Beltran, would extend the lead to give the Tigers a seven point lead (13-6). The Bruins would use a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to one (17-16). Kills from junior Taylor Patterson and Beltran combined with Belmont errors would keep the Tigers in the lead and make the score 22-19. Kills from freshman Zahria Graham and senior Haley Hampton would secure the Tigers’ first win of the night with a 25-21 set score.
The second set was back and forth with the Tigers leading 13-12 before a 7-3 run, highlighted by kills from Hampton, Patterson and freshman Ayanna Chase, would give TSU a 20-15 lead. The Tigers would only allow the Bruins to score three more times before taking the second set 25-18 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the third before a 5-1 run by the Bruins would close the gap in the score to one (9-8). Things were back and fourth until a 5-2 run would give the Tigers a 20-16 lead. Belmont threatened at a comeback with a 4-2 run of their own to make the score 22-20 but a Bruin attack error and one final kill from Hampton would seal the Tigers’ 25-12 win and 3-0 sweep over Belmont.
“The girls came out ready to play today,” said head coach Kathy Bullock. “They like playing Belmont so they came excited, played hard for their seniors and took care of them in three.”
The Tigers hit .252 as a team while keeping Belmont to a .123 attacking percentage.
Junior Chloe Watson led the Tigers with 10 kills and nine digs followed by Taylor Patterson and Zahria Graham who each had eight kills on the night.
