Nashville, Tenn.- The Tennessee State volleyball team (10-10, 5-3 OVC) returns home this weekend for conference matches against Southeast Missouri (7-14, 3-5 OVC) and UT Martin (7-18, 3-5 OVC).
Last Time Out
The Tigers split last weekend, earning a five-set win against Austin Peay on Friday before dropping a match 3-0 to Murray State.
Hampton led the Tigers offensively with 14 kills on 29 attempts for a team-high .414 attack percentage against Austin Peay. The senior also recorded 12 service aces through both matches last weekend.
Ayanna Chase recorded her second double-double of the season against the Lady Govs with 10 kills and a team-high of 10 blocks, while Watson recorded her tenth of the year with 14 kills and 16 digs.
The Tigers hit .137 as a team through the two matches.
A Look at the Tigers
-The Tigers are led offensively by junior outside hitter Chloe Watson who has recorded 278 kills and averages 2.17 kills per set. In conference, Watson is currently first in the OVC in kills (145) and kills per set (4.39). Watson has had eleven double-doubles on the season.
-Sophomore setter Samantha Beltran has dished out 679 assists for an average of 9.05 per set.
-Defensively at the net freshman middle Ayanna Chase leads with 66 blocks followed closely by senior middle Haley Hampton with 55 and Watson with 47. In the back, senior libero Madison Halterman leads the defense and the OVC with 347 digs.
-TSU currently holds the fourth place spot in conference, out of 12 teams.
-Tennessee State is ranked fifth in the OVC in attacking percentage (.194), second in blocks (69) and fourth in service aces (45). TSU’s offense has recorded 396 kills through the last eight OVC matches.
The Redhawks are sporting a 7-14 record after dropping two games last weekend at SIUE and Eastern Illinois. Now sitting at .375 with a 3-5 record in the Ohio Valley Conference, Southeast is tied with three other teams for seventh in the league.
On the road, SEMO has a 0-3 conference record and a 2-2 non conference record.
Southeast leads the league with 73 total blocks and 2.43 blocks per set in conference-only matches. Nzingha Clarke's 1.30 blocks per set ranks first in OVC play.
The Redhawks rank 35th nationally with 16.36 digs per set. Jade Mortimer ranks third against conference opponents, averaging 4.23 digs per set. Her season total of 355 digs is second in the OVC, behind Madison Halterman.
In the front, Krissa Gearring leads the offense with 206 kills on the season, averaging 2.68 kills per set and hitting .121.
The Tigers are 5-41 against SEMO all-time.
The match is set for Friday at 6 p.m. in Kean Hall. Fans are asked to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Scouting UT Martin
The Skyhawks come into this weekend 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play. UT Martin is also tied for seventh in conference, along with SEMO and SIUE.
UT Martin is currently on two-game losing streak after dropping matches to Eastern Illinois and SIUE this past weekend.
Offensively, Lael Ceriani (226 kills, 2.48 per set) and Madison Wessling (210 kills, 2.31 per set) have led the Skyhawks this season.
Setter Ellie Cain has dished out a total of 782 assists on the season, averaging 8.69 per set.
Defensviely in the front, Kiah Cheatham leads the Skyhawks with 60 blocks on the season (0.83 per set). In the back, Chelsea Bowles leads UT Martin with 301 digs on the season, averaging 3.50 per set.
The Tigers have a 13-33 all-time record against the Skyhawks.
The match is set for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Kean Hall.
