Tigers Prevail in Five-Set Win Over Austin Peay

Clarksville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State volleyball team (10-9, 5-2 OVC) came out victorious in a five-set battle with OVC rival Austin Peay (6-16, 1-6 OVC) on Friday.

The Tigers and the Lady Govs were neck and neck in the first, tying things up eight times throughout the set. With the score tied at 15, the Tigers used a 5-1 run highlighted by a service ace from junior Chloe Watson and two kills from senior Haley Hampton to make the score 20-17. The Lady Govs pushed back to tie things up once more at 22 before two kills from freshmen Ayanna Chase and a Austin Peay error would give the Tigers their first win of the set, 25-22.

A .062 attacking percentage in the second set made it hard for the Tigers to produce, as they dropped the set 25-22. The Tigers tried at a comeback with a four-one run on the service of junior Taylor Patterson, who recorded a kill and an ace during the run, to tie things at 22. Two Austin Peay kills and a TSU attack error would push the Lady Govs past the Tigers and secure their fist win of the match.

Nine attack errors and a .075 hitting percentage in the third made it difficult for the Tigers to come out on top as they dropped the set by only two points. A service ace from Hampton would give the Tigers a 20-18 lead before three back-to-back errors by TSU would give the Lady Govs a 21-18 lead. The Tigers would manage to tie things back up at 22 but three kills from Austin Peay would secure a 25-23 third-set win for the Lady Govs.

With things tied at seven in the fourth, a ten-point run at the service of Hampton would give the Tigers an 18-7 lead. TSU would remain in the lead for the remainder of the set, before taking the set 25-17 and tying the match at two.

The Tigers took their fourth-set win momentum to the fifth set and jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Kills from Watson and sophomore Samantha Beltran would extend the Tiger lead to nine, but TSU errors would allow the Lady Govs to come within a point of the Tigers (9-8). A kill from Watson and two blocks from Chase would solidify a 15-9 fifth-set win for the Tigers and a 3-2 OVC victory over Austin Peay.

The Tigers finished the night with a .208 attacking percentage, collecting 55 kills. TSU had a stellar night defensively, putting up 18 blocks and recording 66 digs.

Hampton led the Tigers offensively with 14 kills on 29 attempts for a team-high .414 attack percentage. The senior also recorded a season-high of eight service aces through five sets and had four blocks.

Ayanna Chase recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and a team-high of 10 blocks, while Watson recorded her tenth of the year with 14 kills and 16 digs.

Samantha Beltran led the team with 41 assists and senior Madison Halterman had 20 digs through the five sets.

The win over Austin Peay puts TSU in second place in OVC standings and gives the Tigers their first winning record all season.

Tennessee State is back in action tomorrow as they face Murray State, who is currently number one in the OVC. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. and live stats will be available to follow during the game.
