Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State volleyball team (5-9, 0-2 OVC) looks to pick up its first conference win as they head to play crosstown and OVC rival Belmont University (5-8, 2-0 OVC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Tigers got out to a slow start in OVC play, falling 0-2 the opening weekend to Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. TSU took both games to five sets, but were unable to snag a win.

Tennessee State is ranked amongst the best in the conference in multiple categories. The team is ranked fifth in attacking percentage (.185) and second in service aces (88). TSU's offense has recorded 582 kills through 52 sets of play. 

The Tigers are led offensively by junior outside hitter Chloe Watson who has recorded 184 kills and averages 3.54 kills per set, which ranks fifth highest in the OVC. Watson also leads the team with 21 service aces. Sophomore setter Samantha Beltran has dished out 447 assists for an average of 8.6 per set. Defensively at the net freshman middle Ayanna Chase leads with 39 blocks followed closely by senior middle Haley Hampton with 38 and Watson with 33. In the back, senior libero Madison Halterman leads the defense with 229 digs.

 

Belmont Breakdown

The Bruins are currently 5-8 overall and are tied for first in the conference with a 2-0 record in OVC play.

Last time out, the Bruins collected wins against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. 

Belmont is led by sophomore Arianna Person, who is ranked amongst the best in the conference in multiple categories. Person is third in kills averaging 3.59 per set, second in service aces averaging 0.45 per set, and third in points averaging 4.19 per set. Sophomore Emma Price is ranked third in the conference for assists with an average of 9.42 per set.

As a team, the Bruins are hitting .153 on the season, averaging 11.9 kills per set. Defensively, Belmont averages 13.3 digs per set and 1.6 blocks per set.
