MOREHEAD, Ky.- Tennessee State volleyball (5-8, 0-1 OVC) dropped its conference opener in five sets to Morehead State (4-11, 1-0 OVC) on Friday.
TSU would come up short in the back-and fourth match as they fell to the Eagles 3-2. The set scores were 26-24, 13-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-13.
The Tigers rallied in the second after falling 26-24 in the first set to tie the match up 1-1. TSU recorded an impressive 17 kills and hit .652 in the second set, allowing the Tigers to take the set 25-13.
Building off of their momentum, the Tigers jumped out to 14-9, 18-14, and 22-17 leads in the third set. However, the Eagles would go on a 8-1 run to take the lead and win the set 25-23.
With the Eagles now leading the match 2-1, it was the Tigers turn to respond. Down 20-17 late in the match, Eagle errors, kills from junior Chloe Watson and services aces from sophomore Samantha Beltran and junior Puamana Danielson would allow for a 9-4 run to win the set 26-24 and tie the match at two a piece.
The Tigers fell behind 12-8 in the fifth set before attempting a comeback with a 5-2 run that put TSU within a point of Morehead State. One final kill from the Eagles would allow MSU to take the set 15-13 and snag its first conference win.
Watson led the Tigers through five sets with an impressive 26 kills, 10 digs, four service aces and two blocks. Freshman Zahria Graham followed, collecting 10 kills and two blocks.
Sophomore Samantha Beltran led the team in with 45 assists, while senior Madison led the team with 24 digs.
