Nashville, Tenn.- The Tennessee State volleyball team will be back on the road again this weekend as they open up conference play on Friday against Morehead State before playing Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
The Tigers started out the season slow, falling 0-3 in the first games of the season. The team goal has been to get 10 percent better after each match and TSU has done just that. The Tigers are now 5-7 on the season and rank third in OVC standings. TSU has accumulated 471 kills, 482 digs, 69 service aces and 66 total blocks through 42 sets.
Junior Chloe Watson leads the team in kills (133), kills per set (3.17) and service aces (160 followed by senior Haley Hampton who has 93 kills and a .255 hitting percentage on the season. Sophomore setter Samantha Beltran leads the team with 357 assists
Senior Madison Halterman leads the team defensively; collecting 185 digs so far this season and averaging 4.4 digs per set.
Tennessee State is currently riding a two-game losing streak after falling to New Orleans and East Tennessee State in their last two matches.
Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles are currently 3-10 overall and are riding a three-game losing streak after falling to Samford, East Tennessee State and Wright State in their last three matches.
Morehead State is led by freshman Merideth Jewell. Jewell has collected 250 kills, which ranks fifth in the country. Her 4.55 kills-per-set rank 12th in the NCAA and her 5.14 points-per-set rank 13th.
TSU’s all-time record against Morehead State is 9-46. The Tigers split with the Eagles last season, winning in five matches at home and falling in the away game 3-1.
Evaluating Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels are 1-14 so far this season and are riding a seven-game losing streak. Eastern Kentucky’s lone win this season was against Northern Kentucky University.
EKU is led by Celina Sanks, who has 133 kills on the season and averages 2.51 kills per set.
The Tigers went 0-2 last season against the Colonels and have a 10-48 all-time record.
