Tigers Sweep Jaguars

Baton Rouge, La. – The Tigers (4-5) brought the momentum from their win on Tuesday night against Alabama A&M to their match against Southern University (0-12) on Thursday, sweeping the Jaguars in three straight sets.

The Tigers started off neck and neck with the Jaguars before a 6-1 run would extend TSU’s lead 16-11 in the first set. Southern attempted to wilt away at their five point deficit, but the Tiger defense would only allow the Jags to score six more points before junior Puamana Danielson’s service ace would put an end to the battle and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the match.

TSU jumped ahead early in the second set, leading 10-3 before forcing Southern into their first timeout of the set. TSU continued to extend their lead with the help of Jaguar errors and kills from junior Chloe Watson and freshman Ayanna Chase to make the score 21-8. More Jaguar errors would allow the Tigers to take the second set 25-9.

The third set would prove to be more of the same. The Tigers dominated the Jags offensively hitting .304 while Southern had a negative hitting percentage for the set. Jaguar errors and a strong overall performances by the Tigers allowed TSU to take the set 25-11, solidifying the fourth win of the season for Tennessee State.

The Tigers hit .337 as a team, the highest hitting percentage as a team so far this season. Watson led the team with .400 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 25 attempts. The junior also collected seven digs, and three blocks. Senior Haley Hampton collected 11 kills with two blocks and led the team in hitting percentage (.562). Ayanna Chase had an impressive outing against the Jags, as the freshman hit .357 through three sets, tallying 8 kills on 14 attempts. The freshman also recorded three blocks throughout the match.
