Tigers Tame Bulldogs in 3-0 Victory

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State volleyball team (3-5) took on HBCU rival Alabama A&M (1-11) Tuesday night in Kean Hall. The Tigers swept the Bulldogs in three sets to claim their first home court victory and third win of the season.

Despite being outhit by the Bulldogs in the first set, the Tigers were able to keep the lead for majority of the set. Tiger attack errors combined with a few kills from the Bulldogs allowed Alabama A&M to tie things up late in the set but a 5-1 run by TSU, highlighted by junior Puamana Danielson’s game winning service ace would give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the match. Junior Arijana Anderson led TSU with four kills on six attempts, hitting .667 for the first set.

The Tigers trailed 14-10 in the second set before going on a 6-2 run, highlighted by three kills from freshman Ayanna Chase, to tie things up 16-16. Attack errors from the Tigers would allow for the Bulldogs to take the lead once again, making the score 21-18. A couple of Bulldog errors and kills from Anderson and senior Haley Hampton would allow for TSU to take their first lead of the game (24-23). Another Bulldog attack error would make the score 25-23, and allow the Tigers to take the second set of the match.

TSU took its momentum into the third set of the match, leading 19-11 before forcing the Bulldogs into their first timeout. The Tigers would only allow Alabama A&M to put up three more points before a service ace from senior Madison Halterman would end the game 25-14, giving TSU its third win of the season.

Junior Chloe Watson led the Tigers with 14 kills on 40 attempts, hitting .250 through three sets. Ayanna Chase put up a career-high of 10 kills, while Haley Hampton recorded 9 kills. Madison Halterman, the OVC Defensive Player of the Week, had an impressive 22 digs (3.14 d/s).

The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Louisiana to take on Southern University. For more news and updates, follow @TnStateVB.
