TSU Volleyball Hosts Alabama A&M in First Mid-Week Match of Season

Nashville, Tenn.- The Tennessee State volleyball team (3-5) will take on Alabama A&M (1-10) in their “Code Blue” game on Tuesday night in Kean Hall.

The Tigers face the Bulldogs in their second home game of the season. This will be the 17th matchup all-time between the two schools on the volleyball court, with the series tied 8-8. After a 3-1 victory for the Tigers last season, the all-time series is tied 8-8.

 

Last Time Out

TSU returns to their home court after going 2-1 this past weekend at the Georgia Southern Tournament. The Tigers picked up a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern and swept Chicago State in three sets before dropping their last match to Winthrop 3-0.

The Tigers are led senior Madison Halterman and junior Arijana Anderson, who both landed a spot on the Georgia Southern All-Tournament team. Anderson averages 2.77 kills per set and currently has 72 kills and is hitting .176 while Halterman leads the team and the Ohio Valley Conference in digs (123) and digs per set (4.73). 

Junior Chloe Watson notched her third double-double of the team against Georgia Southern with 10 kills and 14 digs. The junior collected a total of 31 kills and 20 digs through 10 sets at the Georgia Southern Tournament.

Senior Haley Hampton had a stellar performance this past weekend. The middle hitter recorded 11 kills on 19 attempts, hitting a team high of .421 through three sets vs. Chicago State and 13 kills on 29 attempts against Georgia Southern. The senior is currently hitting .212 on the season with 52 kills on 137 total attempts.

  

Scouting Alabama A&M

Rose Powell is in her second season with Alabama A&M after guiding the Bulldogs to a 12-18 record in her first year at the helm. Prior to coaching at Alabama A&M, Powell compiled 367 wins at Martin Methodist. She was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team that won silver in Los Angeles.

The Bulldogs are currently riding a seven-game losing streak and has recorded one win on the season so far.  

The lone win so far this season for the Bulldogs came at a tournament in Jacksonville State. On Sept. 4, the Bulldogs knocked off Alcorn State in four sets.

The Bulldogs are lead by Drea Matthews and Ashundria McNeal. The pair has collected 81 kills through 24 sets. McNeal leads the team with a .158 hitting percentage, followed by Matthews who is hitting .136 on the season.

The contest will begin at 6 p.m. in Kean Hall. Fans are asked to wear their blue Tennessee State apparel in spirit of the “Code Blue” game. Follow @TnStateVB for updates and information.
