NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University volleyball team fell to Belmont University Tuesday night at Kean Hall.
The Tigers (6-11, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference) dropped three straight sets to the Bruins (6-10, 2-1 OVC) after taking the first 25-18. TSU had four attackers with double-digit kills led by sophomore Arijana Anderson who put down 14 kills. Seniors Taylor Swayzer (13) and Naomi Wells (12) were right behind her while junior Haley Hampton had 10. Wells also dug up 11 balls to notch her ninth double-double of 2014.
TSU came hard out of the gate, getting 17 kills and hitting .300 in the first set. Belmont fought back, though, and won the second set after sustaining a late charge by the Tigers. The Bruins then took the third and fourth sets to complete their victory.
Freshman Samantha Beltran earned her fourth double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, the Tigers were led by their senior libero, Ileanushka Maldonado, who racked up 16 digs. Junior Madison Halterman added 11 digs of her own to round out the four Tigers in double-digit digs.
The Tigers will head out on the road to Edwardsville, Ill. as they take on the Cougars Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on OVC Digital network for those who cannot make the trip west.
