CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Tennessee State University volleyball team opened up the UC Invitational with a loss to Central Michigan on Friday at Fifth-Third Arena.
The Tigers (4-8) dropped the match to the Chippewas (4-7) 3-1. Senior Naomi Wells had a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs. Junior Haley Hampton and sophomore Arijana Anderson joined her in double digit kills as both notched 10. Wells was joined in double-digit digs by senior Ileanushka Maldonado, who led the team with 15, sophomore Taylor Patterson with 12, and senior Jaime Cooper who had 11.
TSU took the first set in style with a .464 attack percentage with only one error. The rest of the way, however, the Chippewas held them to a .104 clip. The Tigers committed 25 errors in the final three sets.
Freshman Samantha Beltran recorded 45 assists on the match. The Mississauga, Ontario native continues to improve with each match. The Tigers served the ball well, notching 7 aces as a team. Beltran and Patterson had a pair, while Wells, Cooper, and Maldonado all had one.
TSU finishes the UC Invitational tomorrow with Charleston Southern and the hosts. The match with the Buccaneers is set for 1:00 p.m. while the Tigers rematch the Bearcats at 6:00 p.m.
