HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Tennessee State University volleyball team trekked down to Alabama A&M University on Tuesday and came up with their first victory of 2014.
The Tigers (1-6) won 3-1 over the Bulldogs (1-7) with two players in double-digit kills. Senior Taylor Swayzer (14) and sophomore Arijana Anderson (12) both had a banner day, offensively. For Anderson, it was her first game eclipsing 10 kills.
“We’ve been facing a lot of big teams lately,” head coach Kathy Roulhac said. “We really worked on placing our attacks in practice and it paid off tonight.”
Senior Naomi Wells added nine kills to the attack as well as 10 digs to the defense. Senior Jaime Cooper was the team-lead in digs with 12 while senior Ileanushka Maldonado also recorded 10. Maldonado showed her prowess with the serve as she tallied five aces on the match.
“It’s so good to get that monkey off our back. We can take this momentum into the Clemson Classic this weekend and hopefully add to our win total.”
Freshman Samantha Beltran continued her strong first campaign with 37 assists and seven digs. The Mississauga, Ontario native also had three kills on the match.
A long streak of scoring while Beltran served during the second set ultimately sparked the Tigers to the match victory. The Tigers scored eight straight points, building momentum for the rest of the match. Alabama A&M never led the rest of the match.
