Volleyball Camp: Week One in the Books

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University volleyball team wrapped up the first week of practice on Friday at Kean Hall.

·         Today was all about discipline on defense as the team ran a full squad practice with assistant coaches Vicmari Prospero and Donika Sutton serving to each side. Seniors Naomi Wells and Ileanushka Maldonado looked strong. Wells was ferocious on the attack from the right side while Maldonado flexed her defensive range grabbing a hefty number of digs.

·         Two newcomers combined for an impressive two-man block. Sophomore Neisha Crockett and junior Haley Hampton, both transfers, formed a wall on the right side of the net that gave the attackers fits. Both showed good leaping ability as well as positioning.

·         Speaking of Hampton, she has head coach Kathy Roulhac looking forward to this year’s front line: “She’s a beast,” coach Roulhac said. “She gives us another threat, both on offense and defense. When you add her to the front line with Arijana Anderson and Wells…it’s going to be fun to watch.”

·         According to coach Roulhac, the team is in midseason form. The level of intensity that the players show during practice, and the bond that they have off the court, shows a togetherness not seen in recent years. The coach credits an offseason training program that they team really bought into and a weekend “combat training” that revved up the intensity level.

Tempo, tempo – The Tigers offense will be predicated on speed. Opposing teams will need to be on their toes or the TSU attack will have them stuck on their heels.

Saturday scrimmage – TSU will have intra-squad scrimmages Saturday beginning at 8:00 a.m. Practice will shift from Kean Hall to the Gentry Center for week two of camp.
