Volleyball Starts Second Week of Preseason Practice

Nashville, Tenn. - The TSU volleyball team started its second week of practice on Monday in preparation of the team's first match on Aug. 24.

Head coach Kathy Roulhac says that the biggest thing that the team has worked on so far this pre-season is getting the student-athletes into the right spots while learning how to play together.

"We have spent a lot of time on team chemistry and making sure that the girls are aware of their roles so they can execute at the right time," Roulhac said. "Last week we spent a lot of time on fundamentals, so now we are spending time on getting them comfortable in the positions that they were given."

For the freshmen, this has been their first taste of collegiate volleyball, so they are going through some growing pains. However, Roulhac is confident that they all possess the raw talent needed to succeed.

"The freshmen are what I expected to tem to be: not confident. We are working through those freshman issues, so they can execute the plays when the time comes. We do have a lot of options, but the talent is there," Roulhac added.

The strength of the 2012 squad will primarily be defense, so it comes as no surprise to hear that the team has looked good so far in defensive drills.

"I believe that ball control and defense wins matches, so we have been doing a lot of drills related to that. I feel like we will be very successful in those areas when the season starts," said Roulhac.

Three keys to the TSU defense will be junior setter Erika Moss and seniors Britani Hathorn and Calasia Williams. Moss is garnering preseason awards after leading the team in sets last season while Hathorn and Williams averaged 6.14 digs per set a year ago while splitting time at defensive specialist and libero.

The Tigers have less than two weeks to get comfortable playing with each other and learn their roles before facing the University of South Dakota in the ISTAP Invitational on Aug. 24.
