TSU Volleyball Falls on the Road to Morehead State

Morehead, Ky. – Two strong sets could not save the Tennessee State volleyball team, as the Tigers lost to Morehead State on Saturday in straight sets (11-25, 21-25, 22-25).

Sophomore outside hitter Sherryce Butler and freshman middle blocker Lindsay Hornsby led TSU with nine kills apiece, but the Tigers only had a .159 hitting percentage in the match.

Junior setter Erika Moss racked up 27 assists and senior libero Britani Hathorn led all TSU defenders with seven digs.

The Tigers fell behind early as a handful of errors let Morehead State jump out to an 8-1 first set lead. TSU cut the lead to six with a kill from sophomore outside hitter Naomi Wells, but would never get closer to the lead than that in the period.

The second set was much more competitive as the teams played to an 8-8 tie at the beginning of the frame. Each side continued to trade points, but a late 4-0 run by Morehead State eventually doomed the Tigers.

TSU came roaring out of the gates to begin the third period, scoring the first three points that included a rare kill from Moss. The Tigers held the lead at 14-13 until an attack error tied the set. From there, neither club was able to break away and the score stayed tied at 22-22. That would end the scoring for TSU as Morehead State used a pair of kills to go on a 3-0 run to end the match.

The Tigers will continue conference play on the road when they take on Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
