Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State volleyball team started fall camp today in preparation for the team’s first game on Aug. 24. The series of practices will be the first opportunity for freshmen to play alongside upperclassmen and give head coach Kathy Roulhac an early look at this season’s squad.
“We are excited to see what the upcoming season has to offer and where we are going play everybody,” Roulhac said. “With the players returning and the players coming in, I feel like we are going to have a good season.”
Roulhac enters her ninth season at TSU with 106 all-time wins. During her tenure, Roulhac has led the Tigers to two OVC titles, an NCAA Tournament berth and three of the best seasons in school history.
Last season, the team boasted an 18-11 overall record while finishing in second place in the conference with a league mark of 13-7. The team led the conference in blocks per set with 2.03 and finished second in the OVC in assists and kills per set with 12.12 and 12.98, respectively.
This year’s squad returns four starters including all-OVC performer junior setter Erika Moss. Last season, Moss finished tied for second in the conference in assists per set with 10.44.
Defensive specialist Calasia Williams and libero Britani Hathorn also return to TSU as the only two seniors on this season’s roster. Hathorn finished eighth in the conference and first on the team in digs per set with 4.1 while Williams finished fourth on the team with 2.04.
The Tigers will welcome seven newcomers to the 2012 team: freshmen Emilie Sandve Aase, Lindsay Hornsby, Shawneis Jones, Jordon Piper and Jordan Strickland along with sophomore Brittany Bunch and junior Lais Soares.
The team’s first match will be Aug. 24 against the University of South Dakota in the ISTAP Invitational hosted by Alabama State.
