TSU Volleyball Opens OVC Play With Win Over EKU

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State volleyball team opened conference play with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16) victory over Eastern Kentucky.

Senior libero Britani Hathorn had a career match for the Tigers, recording 38 digs. Her output was nearly double her previous season high,

Sophomore outside hitter Naomi Wells led the Tigers on the offensive end with 15 kills. Fellow sophomore Sherryce Butler also had a strong match, tallying 11 kills.

Junior setter Erika Moss had yet another 30-plus assist match, and this time had a total of 37.

TSU only allowed Eastern Kentucky to hit .035 on the night.

The Tigers jumped out to a 10-5 on the back of two kills by Wells to start the match. EKU would comeback however, and actually took the lead before another Wells kill tied the set at 18. The two sides traded points until a perfect assist from Moss was slammed home by Butler for the set-winning kill.

Again, TSU started strong early in the second set as sophomore outside hitter Rachel Ambroch- playing in her first match in nine contests- recorded a kill to give the Tigers the lead at 10-7. Even after a pair of timeouts, EKU could not recover from the deficit, and a late error caused them to fall behind two sets to none.

Neither team could break away during the third period, and the match was tied six times. Finally at 19-19 EKU mounted a charge. The Colonels went 6-2 down the stretch and an error from Wells ended the set.

The fourth and final frame proved to be a blowout and TSU started on a 15-6 run highlighted by three kills from Ambroch. The Tigers kept up the assault as three kills from three different players keeping the lead out of EKU's reach. An assisted kill from Moss to Ambroch ended the match.

The Tigers will look to improve their record to 7-7 when they take on Morehead State tomorrow.
