Volleyball kicks season off at Big Orange Bash

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team will officially kick-off the 2011 season this weekend at the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson University, Aug. 26-27.

TSU will open up the tournament with a contest against South Carolina State on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing host Clemson (12 p.m.) and Loyola University Maryland (4 p.m.) on Saturday.

The Tigers enter the season with a core of experienced returners and a host of talented newcomers. Among the top returning players are 2010 All-OVC and 2011 All-OVC Preseason selection Shaquita Williams and 2010 All-Newcomer selection Erika Moss.

Williams was the offensive leader for TSU last season as she averaged 2.74 kills per set while hitting a team second-best .226.  She also led the team and ranked fifth in the OVC in service aces. After missing the first part of the season due to a foot injury, Moss recorded a team best 952 assists and finished ranked fourth in the OVC.  She averaged 9.4 assists and 2.37 digs per set.

Last season, TSU finished with an overall record of 9-18 and a 7-11 conference mark (t-7th place.) The Tigers averaged 11.86 kills, 1.75 blocks and 14.86 digs per set. TSU finished the season with a .173 attack percentage.

The Opponents

South Carolina State won the 2010 MEAC Volleyball Championship and was predicted to finish second in the 2011 Southern Division of the MEAC. The Lady Bulldogs also had three players to earn MEAC preseason all-conference honors.

The Clemson volleyball team was picked seventh of twelve teams in the ACC Preseason Poll. Junior Sandra Adeleye, two-time All-ACC selection, was selected to the preseason All-ACC team. Clemson was 18-13 last season and 9-11 in conference play, which put them in ninth place.

Loyola University Maryland's volleyball team was picked to finish eighth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll. The Greyhounds went 14-20 overall last season and finished tied for sixth in the MAAC regular-season with an 8-10 mark.
