Volleyball looks to extend winning streak

Nashville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team will look to extend its winning streak this weekend with matches at Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.

Tennessee State (12-7, 8-4 OVC) will match up with Eastern Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. in Lantz Arena before taking on SIU Edwardsville Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center.

TSU has won two straight matches and is most recently coming off a 3-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky. The Tigers also knocked off UT Martin (3-1) at home and fell to Austin Peay (0-3) on the road last week. The Tigers are in third place in the league standings.

Shaquita Williams leads the team offensively with 3.87 kills per set behind a team best .314 hitting percentage. Williams is also ranked in the top three in the OVC in four statistical categories. She is leads the league in points and service aces while ranking second in kills and third in hitting percentage.

Britani Hathorn ranks eighth in the OVC and leads the Tigers in digs with 4.24 per outing. Danielle Howell has recorded a team best 45 total blocks.

Eastern Illinois (6-16, 4-7) is in a two-way tie for seventh place, just out of post-season contention. The Panthers are riding a three-match winning streak with their most recent victory coming over non-conference opponent Illinois-Chicago. Reynae Hutchinson leads EIU with 3.15 kps while hitting .215. As a team, the Panthers register 11.74 kills per set and hit .153 per contest.

SIU Edwardsville (8-15, 3-8 OVC) had lost six-straight before snapping the skid with a 3-2 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday.  The Cougars currently sit in 10th place in the league standings and are led offensively by Kelsey Augustine with 2.23 k/s. As a team, SIUE averages 12.69 kills per set behind a .194 hitting percentage.
