This Week in Tiger Volleyball
Nashville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team will look to pick-up two road wins this weekend at Murray State and UT Martin. Match time against Murray State is slated for Friday, at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena while Saturday's match-up against UT Martin will kick-off at 2 p.m. in Skyhawk Arena.
In continuance with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Racers of Murray State will be hosting their annual Swinging to Eliminate Cancer fundraiser with this season's donations going to the Murray-Calloway County Regional Cancer Center in honor of Kendra Schwepker, the wife of head coach David Schwepker, who was diagnosed with brain cancer six years ago.
The Tigers (5-13, 3-6 OVC) have dropped four consecutive matches and have slipped into eighth place in the league standings. With this weekend's competition against Murray State and UT Martin, TSU will look to make a push ahead, as only the top six teams make the OVC tournament.
TSU's most recent loss came at the hand of OVC leader Morehead State on Saturday when the Tigers dropped three sets to the Eagles (7-25, 21-25, 25-27). Shaquita led the team with 15 kills in the match and Kamille King paced the defense with nine digs.
Santia Sanders leads the team with 2.43 kps while Vicmari Prospero has a team-best .308 hitting percentage. Prospero also leads the team in total blocks (57) as Kamille King leads TSU in digs with 3.21 per outing. With a total of 928, King is quickly approaching the 1,000-dig mark.
NCAA/ OVC Rankings
Tennessee State is ranked 50th in the nation in service aces with 1.55 per set while Shaquita Williams leads the OVC and ranks 23rd in the nation in aces (0.56). Vicmari Prospero is third in the league in hitting percentage (.308) and eighth in service aces (0.30) and Santia Sanders is also the OVC's top ten in aces (0.28). Kamille King is eighth in digs (3.21) while Erika Moss is eighth in assists (8.85).
Earlier this season, Tennessee State opened up league-play by defeating UT Martin, 3-1, before falling to Murray State, 1-3. Shaquita Williams led the team in kills (4.00 kps) while hitting .386 and recording seven blocks and six service aces over both matches.
Murray State (9-12, 5-5 OVC) has won two straight and is currently in fifth place in the OVC race. MSU defeated Southeast Missouri (25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21) and Eastern Illinois (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) last week. Senior Becca Lamb recorded 3.0 kills per set last week to go with 14 digs, seven blocks and four assists. Junior Kayleah Sauer recorded a season-best 39 digs in the win over Southeast Missouri to finish the week with 53.
UT Martin (4-18, 2-8 OVC) has lost five of its last six matches and is in last place in the OVC standings (10th). Last week, UTM defeated Southeast Missouri (25-26, 18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 18-16) before falling to Eastern Illinois (25-20, 12-25, 19-25, 19-25).The victory over Southeast Missouri marked the first time the Skyhawks have swept the season series against the Redhawks since 2001. Junior Peyton Colcough recorded a career-high 29 assists against Southeast Missouri. Senior Lauren Montague tallied a career best 20 digs in the win over the Redhawks while sophomore Kasey Elswick posted 30 digs which is the fifth-highest single-match total in UT Martin history.
