Nashville --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team dropped the season home opener to Chattanooga, 3-1, on Tuesday night in Kean Hall.
The set scores were 25-27, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-13.
The Tigers (1-6) dropped their fifth straight match while the Lady Mocs improved their overall record to 3-1. Tennessee State tallied 48 kills and 62 digs while Chattanooga registered 45 kills and 63 digs.
TSU seemed to have set one in hand after building a 15-10 lead. However, UTC used a 9-0 run to take the lead and would eventually go on to win the set, 27-25.l
Both teams struggled offensively in the second set as Chattanooga hit .026 and committed eight errors. Tennessee State didn't fair much better, turning in a -.111 hitting percentage and committing 14 miscues in the loss.
Trailing two matches to none, a determined Tiger squad jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the third set. A Chattanooga attack error, made the score 20-14 before Tennessee State went on to claim the contest 25-17.
In the fourth set, with TSU trailing UTC, 8-7, the Lady Mocs outscored the Tigers 13-7 to extend their advantage to 21-13. Chattanooga would not relinquish the lead.
Terakka Walker turned in a double-double with a match-high 13 kills and 12 digs. Shaquita Williams added 10 kills. Calasia Williams (12) and Kamille King (11) also notched double-digits in digs for the Tigers. Yamari Padilla-Collazo dished out 35 set assists for the evening.
The Tigers will hit the road to play in the final tournament of the season when they participate in the WKU Tournament this weekend. TSU will face host Western Kentucky on Friday afternoon before matching up with Northern Illinois later in the evening. TSU will meet Memphis on Saturday.
