Birmingham, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team fell to Samford University 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 28-26) Saturday night in the final match of the Samford Invitational.
Tennessee State moves to 1-2 overall while Samford improves to 3-0.
Junior Santia Sanders led TSU with 10 kills while Sophomore Terakka Walker turned in 12 digs with nine kills and was named to the All-Tournament team. Yamari Padilla-Collazo registered 38 set assists.
The opening moments of set one were close until TSU scored five unanswered points to go ahead 8-3. Later the Tigers got three consecutive kills from Santia Sanders that extended the lead to 11-4. TSU maintained the advantage until SU rallied from behind to tie the contest 21-21. The Bulldogs then outscored the Tigers 4-1 down the stretch to secure the win and take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was filled with long rallies and hard fought battles. With Samford leading TSU 11-10, the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to increase their advantage to 17-12. Down the stretch, the Tigers clawed back to within one (21-20) but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs won the set 25-21.
Set three saw TSU get out to a 5-2 lead. SU, however, would later knot the contest 9-9. Both teams traded points over the next several rallies. With the set tied 17-17, three timely kills gave the Tigers a 20-17 lead and led to a Bulldog timeout. The tightly played set went into extra points. With the set tied 26-26, Samford capitalized on two TSU attack errors to escape with the 28-26 win.
The Tigers will have a week off before returning to action next week at the Georgia Dawgs Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia.
