Volleyball Tigers Receive Awards at Purdue Tournament
West Lafayette, Ind. Senior middle blocker Christian Lowe, junior setter Yamari Padilla-Collazo and junior outside hitter Shawna Ruiz, received achievement awards for their efforts off the court at the Mortar Board Premier Volleyball Tournament hosted by Purdue University. The trio was honored by the Purdue chapter of the Mortar Board after their first match of the tournament.
Christian Lowe received the Community Service Award due to her involvement with the NCAA Habitat for Humanity home build in Nashville, Tenn. Lowe finished the tournament leading the Tigers in kills with 26, adding four assists, and 16 digs.
Receiving honors for the highest GPA was junior setter Yamari Padilla-Collazo. Padilla-Collazo currently holds a 3.71 grade point average. The junior college transfer made her debut as a Tiger in the tournament finishing with 35 assists, 10 kills, 16 digs and two blocks.
Shawna Ruiz was awarded the Most Improved GPA Award for increasing her GPA to 3.39 from the previous semester. Ruiz tallied 15 kills and 16 digs in the tournament.
The Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes students for excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service.
