Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State volleyball team tagged their first win of the season, defeating the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M (3-7) in four sets, 26-24, 26-28, 25-18, 25-21 in their home opener.
Led by Candace Saleaumua, Christian Lowe and Yamari Padilla-Collazo the Tigers (1-4) racked up 41 kills and three blocks. Padilla-Collazzo finished with a .667 hitting percentage with nine assists and two kills. Lowe led all competitors with 16 kills tallying ten digs. Saleaumua turned in 24 assists with 12 digs and seven kills.
In the first set, Alabama A&M remained close, but TSU rallied after the 16th point tie to score nine to the Lady Bulldogs’ five taking the first set, 25-21.
The Tigers got back on track after dropping the second set 26-28, falling behind early in the third. The Tigers extended a 6-6 tie with six unanswered points en route to a 25-18 win.
In the fourth set, the Tigers eliminated all hopes of a comeback taking a commanding lead early in the set. The Lady Bulldogs made sporadic runs, but the Tigers held them off, taking the match in the fourth, 25-21.
The Tigers will hit the road to take on Ohio Valley Conference opponents, Jacksonville State (Sept. 19) and Tennessee Tech (Sept. 20). Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
