NASHVILLE---After falling behind two games, the Tennessee State University volleyball team clawed back to win three consecutive games and claim the 3-2 (30-32, 23-30, 30-28, 30-17, 15-13) victory over Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon in Kean Hall. With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 4-6 (2-0 OVC) while Eastern Illinois moves to 7-4 (0-2 OVC). Eastern Illinois struck first in game one scoring the first two points of the contest but TSU would even the score. Both teams battled back and forth over the next several points but the Panthers were able to squeeze out the 32-30 win. Tennessee State had a slow start in game two and fell behind 1-6. The Lady Tiger offense struggled to find its rhythm as EIU out hit TSU 21 kills to 12 in game two. Down two games to none, the Lady Tigers battled in game three. The score remained close throughout the contest with seven ties and six lead changes until TSU grabbed a 15-12 lead. With the score tied 28-28, TSU scored the next two points to claim the win and extend the match to a game four. The Lady Tigers hit a blistering .475 in game three. Game four went back and forth as neither team led by more than two points at a time until TSU extended it's lead to 16-11. EIU called a timeout to regroup but the Lady Tigers continued to build on the lead. TSU hit .310 in game three and held the Panthers to a hitting percentage of .000. Riding the momentum of game four, Tennessee State jumped ahead 6-2 behind timely kills and blocks from the Lady Tigers. TSU held an 8-5 advantage at the half-way mark and pushed it to 10-5. Not to be denied, Eastern Illinois rallied to cut the deficit to one (11-12). A determined Lady Tiger squad, however, kept the Panthers at bay and pulled out the win. Tennessee State returns to action Friday, September 21, at conference opponent Morehead State. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
