LADY TIGERS OUTLAST SEMO
NASHVILLE---The Tennessee State University volleyball team went down to the wire against OVC opponent Southeast Missouri, defeating the Redhawks 3-2 (30-27, 27-30, 30-21, 27-30, 15-12) Friday night in Kean Hall. With the win the Lady Tigers improve to 3-6 (1-0 OVC) while SEMO falls to 3-7 (0-1 OVC). Kelly Davis and Christian Lowe paced the Lady Tiger offense with 13 kills each while Collese Dornan added 10. Lowe also tallied a team high 10 blocks for a double-double. In game one, the Lady Tigers built the lead up to ten points (20-10) but the Redhawks responded with an 11-1 run that tied the game at 21. Following a timeout by Tennessee State, the score went back and forth over the next several points but timely blocks by Collese Dornan and Christian Lowe helped propel the Lady Tigers to the win. TSU fell behind 8-16 in the second game but continued to chip away at the Redhawk lead. The Lady Tigers rallied off six unanswered points behind the serving of Candace Saleamua to come to within two points (22-24). SEMO, however, was able to keep TSU at bay and even the match 1-1. Both teams went point for point from the onset of game three but the Lady Tigers were able to create a little distance and claimed a 15-11 lead. TSU continued to build on its advantage on the way to the 30-21 victory. Southeast Missouri grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in game four but the Lady Tigers regrouped and tied the game 12-12. The Redhawks went back on top (14-12) following two consecutive points and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. The fifth and deciding game featured seven ties as both teams battled for the match. With the game knotted 12-12, TSU scored the final three points of the game to seal the match. TSU returns to action tomorrow afternoon for OVC action against Eastern Illinois. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
