VOLLEYBALL NEARLY EARNS FIRST OVC WIN
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Tennessee State volleyball team (3-12, 0-2 OVC) almost snapped a three-game skid on Saturday, taking on Samford (3-7, 1-1 OVC) in Birmingham. However, the Bulldogs dug deep and held on for the 3-0 win. The opening game saw the Lady Tigers rally behind the serving of rookie Allyson Buckner (Humble, Texas) late in the game to move Tennessee State to within nine, 24-15. Another late surge behind the serving of junior Jennifer Washington (East Pointe, Ga.) held the Bulldogs at 29 as TSU moved to within eight but it was too little to late as Samford went on to take the game, 30-22. In game two, the serving of sophomore LaQuata Marsh (Chattanooga, Tenn.) helped push the Lady Tigers twice to within striking distance before the Bulldogs pulled away for the 30-25 win. Marsh notched three of her four kills on the day in game two. Game three went in similar fashion to Samford, 30-21. Marsh hit .300 on the day with two service aces while Buckner hit .278 with seven kills. Washington picked up nine digs. Tennessee State returns to action on Tuesday, September 28 as it hosts crosstown rival Lipscomb at 7 p.m. in Kean Hall.
