DESPITE EFFORT FROM SENIORS, VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO SAMFORD, 3-1
BIRMINGHAM --- The Lady Tiger volleyball team came close to picking up their second Ohio Valley Conference win of the season but fell to Samford (12-17, 6-10 OVC), 3-1, on Friday night in Birmingham. The loss moves Tennessee State to 7-24 overall and 1-14 in the OVC. Game one saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 13-9 lead before Tennessee State tied the game at 16 behind the serving of freshman Shelby Myers (Smyrna, Tenn.). The surge was not enough to push the Lady Tigers to to win and they dropped game one, 30-25. Tennessee State came out swinging to open game two with senior Kristin King (East St. Louis, Ill.) leading the charge. She picked up six-straight points, including three-consecutive service aces, to put the Lady Tigers ahead, 7-2. Samford was finally able to catch up the TSU and knot the game at 20 behind the serving of Kristin Berryman, who added seven-straight points. However, the Bulldogs were able to pull away and take game two, 30-25. Game three saw Samford come out strong to open play. Tennessee State was finally able to knot the game at 21 and was again led by King, who picked up two more service aces in a row. With the game tied at 26, the Lady Tigers made their move and capitalized on several Samford errors to take game three, 30-27. The Bulldogs clamped down on errors in game four and never let the Lady Tigers share a piece of the lead. Samford went on to take the final game, 30-15. King ended the night with a season-high five service aces and also added six digs. Sophomore Thereza Wright (El Paso, Texas) led the Lady Tigers, hitting .286 with 15 kills and two digs. Classmate Catherine Armwood (Durham, N.C.) contributed 22 digs and senior Jennifer Corral (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) also added double-digit digs with 18. Tennessee State closes out the 2003 campaign on the road against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 15. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
