LED BY FRESHMEN, VOLLEYBALL DOMINATES ALCORN STATE
The Tennessee State volleyball team (6-17, 0-9 OVC) extended its win streak to two and ended its eight-match homestand with a 3-0 shutout of Alcorn State (6-19, 2-3 SWAC) on Tuesday night at Kean Hall. Game one started pretty even until freshman LaQuata Marsh (Chattanooga, Tenn.) railed off 11-consecutive points to win the game, 30-18. She finished the night hitting .400 and three service aces. The Lady Tigers capitalized on Alcorn State's eight errors to take game two, 30-20. Stellar serving by another freshman, Shelby Myers (Smyrna, Tenn.) also helped push Tennessee State to the win in that game. Game three saw both squads serving ball after ball out of bounds. The Lady Braves moved to within four of the Lady Tigers before TSU pulled away for the 30-22 win. Five Lady Braves hit below .100 and the team racked up a total of 25 errors on the night. Rolanda Mayfield led Alcorn State with 12 kills and Moriah Robertson added eight digs for the defensive effort. Four Lady Tigers hit over .400 - freshmen LaQuata and LaQuita Marsh (Chattanooga, Tenn.), sophomore Thereza Wright (El Paso, Texas) and senior Jennifer Corral (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). Corral also smashed a match-high 19 kills while sophomore Catherine Armwood (Durham, N.C.) contributed a match-high 14 digs. Tennessee State returns to action on Friday as it travels to Eastern Kentucky for a match beginning at 7 p.m.
