NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State softball team closed out the second full week of practice with a scrimmage. The Tigers took advantage of the weather to faceoff with each other after being forced inside due to rain in the Nashville area.
Freshman Bri Vire shined with four hits on the day including a pair of extra base hits. Head coach Andrea Browning will look for Vire to strengthen the outfield after the graduation of Courtney Gearlds who had a stellar four-year career for the Tigers. Gearlds exited with her name stamped in the TSU record book with 10 top 10 finishes in career categories and seven top 10 placements in seasonal records.
Vire will join veterans Abi Stephens and Patton Akers in the outfield. Stephens enters her third season in Blue after batting .222 in 42 games, starting 37, in leftfield. The junior registered four doubles, a triple and 10 RBI. Akers played in 45 games as a freshman, starting 44, mainly in right field with a few starts in center. Akers hit .232 with three doubles, 13 RBI, seven stolen bases and 16 walks for a .364 on base percentage.
Freshman transfer Lindsay Warren looks to battle for a spot in the outfield along with junior Kierra Ware and true freshman Ariel Johnson. Junior Maddison Clark provides more depth, despite moving to the infield in 2018 after two seasons in the outfield.
