Late Inning Two Out Rally Propels Tigers to Sweep at Alabama A&M

NORMAL, Ala. --- Tennessee State found themselves down to their last out before starting a rally which led to an eighth inning win and a doubleheader sweep at Alabama A&M on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers claimed a 2-1 victory in the opener and capped off the twin bill with a Lauren Woodard, 7-0, shutout.

TSU improved to 11-29 on the season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 13-27.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, pinch hitter Danica Gleason stepped to the plate and hit a two out double off the fence in leftfield. The senior advanced to third on a passed ball as Kasey Cox earned a walk. Gleason would score two pitches later as Selena Crafton dropped a single into leftfield to even the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. The Tigers stepped up as Gleason fielded a ground ball at shortstop and delivered a strike to Emma Colegrove at home to record the second out of the inning. Starter Lauren Powell worked her way out of the jam enticing another grounder to Gleason who outraced a Bulldog runner to third base to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, Abi Stephens picked up her lone hit of the game with a single through the left side of the infield to chase home Patton Akers for a 2-1 advantage. The Bulldogs put runners on second and third in their half of the eighth, but Powell notched her fourth strikeout to secure the win for the Tigers.

Powell worked all eight innings and surrendered three hits and five walks, as she improved to 5-12.

Crafton and Colegrove each finished with two hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, Woodard moved to 3-10 as she allowed three hits and fanned three in her first shutout of the season.

The Tiger offense would give Woodard all she would need in the third inning as Akers singled up the middle to plate Cox.

The Tigers put an exclamation point on the game with six runs in the fourth. TSU received three consecutive singles from Gleason, Erica O’Kane and Stephens to load the bases with one out. Colegrove picked up an RBI with a ground ball short that brought home Gleason ahead of the throw home.

O’Kane and Stephens crossed home plate to make the score 4-0 on an error off the bat of Woodard. The Tigers added another on the second miscue of the inning by the Bulldogs as pinch runner Maddison Clark came in to score.

TSU continued to add to its lead as pinch runner Randi Marshall scored on a wild pitch and Cox came in on a Crafton ground out.

The Tigers return to Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday as they visit Murray State for a doubleheader. The weekend will close out as TSU plays a pair of games at Austin Peay on Sunday.
