2017 Tigers: Tennessee State claimed a win over Jarvis Christian and two over Jackson State to finish 3-1 to open the season for the first time since 2011. Danica Gleason led the Tigers at the plate finishing 10-for-14 at the plate (.714). The senior hit three doubles, drove in five runners, stole four bases and scored seven runs. Freshman Megan Huppee and junior Whitney Ennis popped their first career home runs on Saturday versus Jackson State. The Tigers found success on the base paths, finishing a perfect 20-of-20 in stolen bases and rank first in the nation averaging 5.0 swipes per game.

The Cyclones batted .285 as a team over the first weekend and sport six hitters over .300. Kelsey McFarland led Iowa State with eight hits in 15 at bats (.533). McFarland also topped ISU with four runs, four RBI and two stolen bases. Sami Williams had a pair of doubles while hitting .385. Savannah Sanders was the workhorse in week one working 18.1 innings. Sanders appeared in all five games, starting two, and earned a save despite finishing 0-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Emma Hylen fanned 10 batters in 9.2 innings, as she went 1-1 with a 2.90 ERA. Brianna Weilbacher rounded out the ISU pitching staff earning a win to start the season, holding her opponents to a .188 batting average while striking out eight in four innings.

Alabama A&M (1-4)
2016 Record: 12-35

Danielle Hansell and Ariel Smith led the Bulldogs during the opening weekend. Hansell scored three runs while batting .417 and totaling a .529 on base percentage. Smith batted .400 as she collected a double, a triple, a home run and four RBI. AAMU will also look to Tiana Sanders who finished 2016 with a .352 batting average, 14 homers and 37 RBI, as well as Imani Largin who batted .349 on 38 hits, while scoring 28 runs. In the circle, Caitlyn Hayden handled the load during the first week of the season finishing 1-2 with a 2.80 ERA and holding opponents to a .250 batting average as she tossed 20 of the teams 34 innings pitched.
