NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State softball opened practice for the 2017 season on Wednesday evening. The Tigers worked out indoors for the first two days due to wet field conditions.
“As a whole, it was a good practice,” said senior outfielder Courtney Gearlds. “There are still things we need to improve on, as well as work on our communication. We have been gone for a month, so we need to back in the swing of things.”
The Tigers return 16 members from the 2016 squad which finished 10-45, 3-23 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Nine newcomers join the program in search of their first bid to the OVC Championships since 2001.
“I felt a big difference from last year to this year,” said junior catcher Emma Colegrove. “I was really impressed with all the positive attitudes. Everyone was vocal, which made it great coming back for our first practice.”
The Tigers will continue workouts on Friday with two practices as they take advantage of the days before the start of classes. The Big Blue will kick off the season on Feb. 10 at the Jackson State Tournament.
