Tigers Clipped by Lions, 5-1

HAMMOND, La. – Tennessee State fell in the final game of the Lion Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers start the season 1-4 after a 5-1 decision at the hands of host Southeastern Louisiana (4-1).

The Lions grabbed a 4-0 advantage with a run in the second and three in the fourth off starter Lauren Woodard.

The Tigers would get on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI double by Abi Stephens to cut the lead to 4-1. Courtney Gearlds reached on a one-out line drive single up the middle and proceeded to steal second giving the Tigers their first runner in scoring position for the game. Gearlds moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Randi Marshall and scored a batter later as Stephens ripped a shot off the left field fence.

The Lions would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to produce the winning margin.

Woodard fell to 1-2 as she pitched a complete game surrendering four earned runs on six hits and a walk.

TSU returns home to host Butler, East Tennessee State, Evansville, Northern Kentucky and ULM for the 15-game Tiger Classic from Feb. 19-21.

Notes:
The Tigers wore their Camouflage jerseys with White pants … TSU is now 0-6 versus Southeastern Louisiana … Freshman Abi Stephens recorded three hits to open her career, two doubles and a home run … Courtney Gearlds was hit by a pitch for the second consecutive day, raising her total to 19 times - eight shy of the top spot in the TSU record book.
