IRONDALE, Ala. – Tennessee State continued its torrid hitting on the final day of Tiny Laster Classic as they picked up two wins. TSU claimed an 8-4 win over Alabama State and closed out the classic with an 11-10 win over Alabama A&M.
TSU improved to 6-10 as they collected 24 hits over two games, 61 over the three day event for a .391 team batting average. The Tigers also powered the ball all over the park on the weekend with 13 doubles, four triples and six home runs.
In the opener, TSU struck first in the third as Lindsey Burgess blasted a three-run home run to center. Up 3-1 in the fourth, the Tigers added to its lead as Chelsey Buchanan scored on a wild pitch and Courtney Gearlds crossed home plate on a single from Lauren Dreitlein.
Three consecutive hits to start the fifth helped the Tigers pile on to its advantage. After Joselynn Yates and Burgess singled, senior Tayler Shimizu smoked a ball down the left line and into the corner allowing both runners to score. Shimizu scored a batter later on a Buchanan sacrifice fly.
TSU fended off an Alabama State comeback as Jasmine Matchen pitched the final three runs picking up her first save of her TSU career. The juniors performance secured the win for Savannah Womack (1-2) who tossed the first four innings.
Dreitlein led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Yates and Burgess added two hits apiece.
In the finale, Alabama A&M took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Tigers came back with two of its own in the second. Burgess scored on a bases loaded ground out by Womack, while Carionna Hassell touched home plate on a single from Danica Gleason.
Hassell gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead in the fourth as she hit a bases-loaded clearing double, chasing home Yates, Kate Morris and Burgess. The lead was short lived as the Bulldogs score four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead 6-5.
The Tigers would answer the call in the bottom half of the inning. Gleason tied the score at 6-6 on a one-out squeeze bunt by Yates. Morris followed with the first of two doubles as she just missed a home run by inches as the ball hit the top of fence. The two-bagger brought home Gearlds as TSU regained the lead 7-6.
Tennessee State was not finished as Burgess singled and stole second setting up an RBI opportunity for Hassell. The freshman stood tall to the challenge as she hit a hard ground ball through the right side of the infield to plate both runners.
AAMU would not back down as they cut the lead to 9-8 with a pair of runs in the sixth. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Morris ripped a ball down the left field line hitting half way up the fence for her second double in as many at bats. With the senior on second, Burgess wasted no time going after the first pitch and leaving no doubt as the ball cleared the fence in left and hit the TSU bus across the street. The blast put TSU back on top by three, 11-8.
The Bulldogs would threaten one more time as they mounted a comeback after two quick outs. AAMU scored two runs and had runners on first and second when the final out was recorded.
