Week 1 Recap With Tom Opdenbrouw, Softball Travels To Alabama A&M
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State softball will continue play as they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama A&M in a double header on Friday. The two teams have squared off 24 times over the years, with the Tigers holding a 21-3 advantage over the Bulldogs.
TSU swept a double header the last time the squads met in May of 2012. This will mark the first time the Tigers have played in Huntsville since 2009, in which the Tigers swept AAMU. The two teams were scheduled to play in Huntsville in 2012, but the games were cancelled due to rain.
The first game of Friday’s twin bill is set for 1:00 p.m. All games are available through Live Stats and can be heard on tsutigers.com.
The Tigers opened the season with a 1-4 record at the Louisiana Classic/Tiger Classic. Tayler Green earned the win in her first start with a 4-1 victory over Memphis. Tayler Shimizu and Courtney Gearlds led the squad offensively with four hits. The duo each hit .308, scored one run and stole two bases. Shimizu drove in two runners, while Gearlds recorded a double, a walk and was hit by a pitch.

The Bulldogs opened the season with a perfect 6-0 record on the first weekend of play, including a sweep at South Carolina State. Anisa Britt has tossed 19.1 innings and has registered a 3-0 record with a 2.79 ERA. Jordan Bradley is 2-0 on the season with a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings of work.
Offensively, AAMU is batting .400 as a team and is averaging 10.3 runs per game. Taiya McInnis finished 9-of-15 (.600) last weekend with three doubles, scoring six runs and driving in five. Tiana Sanders led the team in RBI as she plated 12 runners, while batting .273 and a home run.
