Tigers Swept at Murray State
MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee State softball program experienced both ends of the offensive spectrum over the weekend as they were held in check at Murray State on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, the Tigers scored 21 runs on 29 hits during its two games at Tiger Field against Austin Peay. Today was a different story, as TSU scored two runs on nine hits during the Ohio Valley Conference twin bill.
Murray State needed five innings in each game as the grabbed a 10-1 win in the opener and a 9-1 victory in the night cap. The Racers improved to 16-10, 4-3 in the OVC, while TSU is now 9-18 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
Sophomore Courtney Gearlds led the Tigers on the RBI single off the bat of Lauren Dreitlein. The run brought the Tigers within two at 3-1. The Racers would respond with five runs in the bottom of the inning on its way to the victory.
In game two, Gearlds picked up two hits in three at bats. Kailey Richard joined Gearlds with two hits, going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt.
Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, the Tigers scored off a pair of doubles. Joselynn Yates drove a ball to wall in right and scored two batters later when Carionna Hassell found the right field corner for a stand up double.
TSU recorded a hit in the first, second and fifth, while picking up two in the third and fourth innings. The seven hits were spread out well enough by Racers starter Haven Campbell to hold the Tigers to one run on the game.
Lindsey Burgess earned the final hit for TSU with a double in the second.
Taylor Green was tagged with the loss and is now 5-8. Amber Galyon suffered the loss in game one and has fallen to 2-6.
Tennessee State will travel to Jacksonville State for a three game series beginning on Saturday, Mar. 28.
