Tigers Look to Rebound at Eastern Kentucky
Richmond, Ky. – Tennessee State dropped their first two games of the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. EKU took the first game 9-2 before using just five innings to win the nightcap 13-5. The Tigers fall to 11-29, 2-12 in the OVC. EKU improved their East Division record to 12-4, 25-16 overall.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth of game one, freshmen Audrey Sensing and Lindsey Burgess teamed up to even the score. Sensing led off the inning with a line drive double to left centerfield on the second pitch of the at-bat. Burgess followed two pitches later with a towering smash to left field for her first career home run.
TSU was one strike away from getting out of the fourth inning tied at 2-2, but EKU would put together a two-out five-run rally to retake the lead 7-2. The Colonels would add two more runs off starter Shea Morris who fell to 7-15 on the season. Morris allowed 14 hits and two walks while fanning six batters.
The Colonels jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after three innings in game two. But the Tigers would fight to get back into the game with a five-run fourth inning. After back-to-back walked to Jennifer Givens and Kacie Daugherty to open the fourth, Audrey Sensing reached, and advanced to second, on an EKU throwing error. Givens and Daugherty both scored on the play to make the score 9-2.
Burgess reached after being hit by a pitch to once again give the Tigers two runners on base. Ashley Haynes took advantage of the runners with a hard line drive to the centerfield wall that would plate both runners and cutting the lead to 9-4. TSU closed out the scoring in their half of the inning as Kate Morris executed the perfect suicide squeeze that allowed Haynes to score easily.
Once again the Colonels would respond with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to close out the victory. Olivia Gamache was ticketed with the loss and is now 4-14.
The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Game can be heard on ovcsports.com.
