Tigers Drop Nail Biter to Eastern Kentucky, 5-3
Richmond, Ky. – The Tigers went back-and-forth early before Eastern Kentucky was able to hold on to an Ohio Valley Conference contest on Sunday afternoon. The Colonels completed the three-game sweep with a 5-3 victory.
EKU started the scoring in their half of the first inning with three unearned runs. The Tigers would get one back in their next at bat as Ashley Haynes scored on a Brianna Roberts sacrifice squeeze. The Colonels responded with another run in the second, but the Tigers clawed back with two more in the third.
Kiarra Freeman led off with a single and went first to third on a single by Lindsey Burgess. The freshman catcher advanced to second on the throw to third and set up an RBI situation for Audrey Sensing. The Carlotte, Tenn., native delivered with a single through the left side allowing Freeman to score easily. Head coach Jeff Dabney gave the green light to Burgess who got in just under the tag to cut the score to 4-3.
The runs batted in for Sensing were numbers 22 and 23 on the season.
After a run by EKU in the third, the two teams went scoreless over the final four innings. Down 5-3, TSU threatened in the top of the sixth as Roberts drove a two-out double to left center. Kate Morris tried to score from first, but was tagged out before she could reach the plate.
Shea Morris (7-16) only lasted an inning and a third due to a blister on her pitching hand. Morris struck out the first two batters she faced before a two out error setup the three unearned runs. Olivia Gamache entered with the score 3-1 and surrendered one run left by Morris on a fielder’s choice. Gamache allowed just two hits, three walks and a run over the 4.2 innings of work.
TSU is now 11-30, 2-13 in the OVC, while EKU improved to 26-16, 13-4.
