Tigers Fall in Final Game of Series

Martin, Tenn. - Tennessee State used speed to jump out early for the third straight game and for the third straight game UT Martin storms back to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Skyhawks won 9-1 in six innings and improved to a league leading 13-2, 24-12 overall. The Big Blue is now 10-21 and 3-8 in the OVC.

Jennifer Givens and Aisha Walker led off with back-to-back bunt singles with Givens going first to third on Walker's hit. TSU scored on the very next pitch when Givens crossed home plate on a double steal to take a 1-0 lead.

Shea Morris would get the first two Skyhawks out before running into trouble. UTM put together three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to take a 2-1 lead after the first. The Skyhawks would add two more runs in the second off Morris to extend the lead to 4-1.

Susie Burke replaced Morris in the second and tossed 2.2 innings of shutout ball before UTM could get to her for three runs in the fifth. Olivia Gamache replaced Burke and extended the game to the sixth.

The Tigers would challenge in the top of the sixth by loading the bases on three hits. Givens and Walker once again led the inning off with back-to-back singles. With one out, Jordan Rehl dropped a base hit just in front of the Skyhawk centerfielder only allowing the Tiger runners to advance one base.

Skyhawk pitcher Chelsea Jones would get Kate Morris and Kelly Troglin to pop out to end the Tiger sixth.

UT Martin closed out the game with a run in the sixth inning making the score 9-1.

Morris took the loss and is now 7-12, while Jones earned all three wins in the series and improved to 16-4.

The Tigers travel to Jacksonville State on Wednesday, April 4 for a mid-week OVC double header.
